Skincare 101: How To Keep Your Summer Skin Glowing
The dreaded cold winter is finally over, and as we welcome the warmer months, you may have noticed changes in your skin. If you’re experiencing increased sensitivity or seasonal allergies, don’t panic. Here are some easy steps to add to your skincare routine and keep your skin healthy and glowing this summer.
1. Exfoliate Regularly
Charles Jovellano, a Board-Certified Cosmetic Dermatology Nurse Practitioner at Natural Beauty Fifth Avenue, recommends exfoliating more frequently with AHA/BHA cleansers. This will help control oil production and remove dead skin cells that can cause breakouts. If your skin can handle it, daily use is ideal; otherwise, every other day will suffice. My top picks are SkinMedica AHA/BHA Cleanser and Neutrogena Oil-Free Salicylic Acid Wash. A handy trick is to leave the cleanser on your face for a few minutes to allow deeper penetration before rinsing.
2. Incorporate a Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C serum is not only a powerful antioxidant that combats stress from pollution and daily life, but it also serves as a photo protectant to prevent sun damage. For normal to dry skin, look for L-ascorbic acid 15%, one of the most effective ingredients. If you’re sensitive, Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD) is a good alternative to prevent redness or irritation. My favorite L-ascorbic acid serum is Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, a splurge but highly effective. For a more budget-friendly option, try Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster Serum. For sensitive skin, Skinceuticals Phloretin or Cerave Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum are excellent choices.
3. Switch to a Lighter Moisturizer
A thinner moisturizer will prevent clogged pores and unwanted blemishes. As humidity increases, your skin retains more moisture, so a thick product is unnecessary. Those with oily skin might even skip moisturizer and just use their Vitamin C serum.
4. Increase Retinol Use
It might sound counterintuitive, but using retinol—whether over-the-counter or prescription (Tretinoin, Tazarotene, Adapalene, Trifarotene)—will decrease oil production and regulate exfoliation. If you’re very sensitive, try using it every other night. Remember, a pea-sized amount is sufficient, and always follow with a moisturizer to minimize irritation. The use of retinol can help reverse sun damage, prevent fine lines and wrinkles, and boost collagen production as well.
5. Be Diligent About Sunscreen
Most importantly, be diligent about sunscreen use. A base tan does not protect you from sunburn. Tanned skin indicates damage from the sun, increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen to protect against UVA and UVB rays. Reapply every two hours, or if you’re sweating or swimming, to keep your skin healthy and damage-free.
